The engineering profession comes with a few perks for the 80 raider, in the form of ‘enchants’ to your current gear that add both stats and an on-use effect, most notably the 24 crit & rocketpack for boots, the 24 spellpower and parachute for cloak, and the 250 haste every minute for gloves. (Shout at me if I have those wrong, I did that from memory!) Engineering is good for most raiders. However, I still find its random items the best part of the profession (along with goggles, however there was no implemented upgrade system for them as there was in TBC, sadly). Items such as a portable mailbox, robots that will repair your gear and sell you items, a gun to suck motes/crystallised whatevers out of passing clouds, and unpredictable transportation systems. The latest of these is the Wormhole Generator: Northrend which allows you to create a wormhole that lets you select your destination zone, and teleport to it. It dumps you somewhere in that zone, on a 4 hour cooldown.
I must say, I prefered the TBC ones. As a Goblin Engineer (the explosives specialisation) my Dimensional Ripper went to Area 52 every time. I still use it today, for its fun effects, none of which are removed on dying or zoning. It also has a four hour cooldown. The random effects you can get are as follows:
- Nothing happens. (Bah)
- Transporter Malfunction (You take on the physical appearance of a random race and gender for the next hour. Awesomesauce.)
- Size problems (You either grow bigger or smaller, alá noggenfogger)
- Soul split (Either your good side or your bad side makes it through alone – both trigger a size increase, Good side coming through turns you pale yellow, Bad side coming through gives you a dark red shadowform)
I still use it every time it’s off cooldown on Aura, it’s fun to run around as a different race, as shown below!
If you take up Engineering, make sure to specialise in either Goblin or Gnome engineering. It’s worth it for the fun!
