The Long Arm of the Law

August 23, 2010

Blogging about the Beta has its issues. Things change, a new iteration might make yesterday’s post completely irrelevant. A while back I went off on one about how Holy was getting loaded with judgement talents (increased damage on judgements, snares on judgements, reactive judgements if we cleansed a friendly target, judgement ice cream, etc) and a few days after all those talents were gone. That post is mostly irrelevant now, but it would have been fun. I posted about it because I liked the sound of it and wanted to discuss it, regardless of whether it stayed in or not. I will do the same today…

Currently, Retribution has a talent called the Long Arm of the Law (awesome name.) It’s three tiers deep and is tied in with an Improved Judgement Range talent. The standard range of an untalented Judgement on the Beta (and live) is 10 yards.

Holy has a talent on live in the 10th tier to increase the range of Judgements to 40 yards. Currently in the Beta, that talent is gone. Seeing as the Improved Judgement in Beta is in the top tier of the Ret Tree, anyone can pick it up if they can spare the points. For Holy, this is a 10 yard nerf. For Ret, this is a 20 yard buff. The Long arm of the Law makes things interesting. It’s a gap closer, something Rets everywhere have been asking for for a long time. The interesting thing is, it comes in the form of a speed increase; whilst not being as visually interesting as Blink or Charge, it does make it much more versatile (ie, judge something far away then speed off in the opposite direction – see ‘Brockian Ultra-Cricket.’*) The speed boost kicks in if you are more than 15 yards away from your target when you judge it. Again, click to expand the picture.

I suspect if this makes it to live someone will write a small range-finder addon to work with this talent. I think the idea is with the ‘activate further than 15 yards away’ business is that if you are within 15 yards of your enemy, a speed boost is not warranted, whereas one 20 or 30 yards away that might well be running away or kiting you very much requires the boost. The combination of these two talents means several awesome things.

  • Rets will be able to do a bit more ranged damage. Along with Exorcism, Taunt (whilst soloing) and Holy Wrath, not being able to melee our target wont necessarily be the end of the world.
  • As long as this buff isn’t spellstealable or purgable, it might see the end of Rets being kited all the time in Battlegrounds.
  • This will make leveling and questing much more efficient. I can just see low level Rets judging far away critters for a speed boost pre-mount level.
  • Combining this with Hand of Freedom would make an excellent getaway method.

So yeah. Keep this one in Blizzard. Go on!
